Newsletter #24

Post by seldum »

Dear Player,

We hope this newsletter finds you well!

Can you believe that on August 23rd, SMR will see its 10th birthday? We thank each and every one of you who has played over the years; it's been remarkable preserving this treasure of classic online gaming with you all. As a thank you to all the players, we have a special surprise planned on that date. Be sure to log in and find out what it is!

Also in honor of the anniversary, we'd like to unveil our new round, "Decennial Resurgence". This map, designed by Azool, is meant to be evocative of the classic SM map, "The Interegnum". Players old and new are invited to partake in the fun!

Along with the new round comes a revamp to the trade ship designs. After years of being the de facto best tradeship, the Planetary Super Freighter has had its trading power reduced. Alongside this change have come increases to the Planetary Trader, Planetary Freighter, and Advanced Courier Vessel, as well as a few others. These changes have been made in the hopes of making trade a more challenging task. Players must now consider various factors before deciding which ship they will choose to enter.

Another change to gameplay will be that players cannot rest in the federally protected spaces of races that they are at war with.

Plans are underway for a SMR meet-up in the UK in December. If you are interested in attending, please check the webboard soon for details.

Before we part ways, we'd like to take the time to congratulate the following players on being promoted to admins: Beausoleil, GreyDeath, Hugh, and JettJackson. They now comprise a team of decision-makers under the auspices of RCK, with input from MrSpock and Page. Feel free to drop into IRC and congratulate them some time.

We will leave you with an introduction to our new round:
"As the Summer Solstice comes to an end, the known universe has begun to collapse around itself. Desperate to save life as they knew it, the 8 races banded together to see if they could discover a way to save themselves. After years of combining their knowledge, they discovered a new part of the universe! A section that appeared to be unaffected by the massive collapsing universe that they were a part of! They pooled their resources together and created an entry way into this newly discovered portion of the universe. When they arrived they started to rebuild their old way of life. Each race spread out into a separate, albeit small, galaxy that they could call their own. They setup ports for trading, shops for commerce and banks for their financial needs. They kept expanding and eventually reached the limit of ports in their home galaxies, and realized the need to expand further into the unknown to find further riches and more home-worlds. The first expedition discovered a series of small galaxies that funneled them into a large bubble galaxy that seemed to be contained in a mysterious gaseous layer all around. The galaxy seemed innocuous enough, and so they began to expand into it. They setup their ports and their shops just as they always had. Eventually they realized once again that they would need to expand their territory further out and began traveling further into the universe. The next galaxy they encountered was another larger galaxy that was also contained by a mysterious gaseous cloud; however, rumors began to circulate that they were not alone in this galaxy. They had heard reports of a fellowship that had been traveling through the galaxy and was determined to accomplish the task that they had set out to complete and to let nothing stand in their path. The expedition had found this galaxy was indeed a dangerous place to conduct business, and contained parts that they dared not venture into; for those that did venture into the “Planetary Clusters”, as they had become to be known, did not return. The only trace left behind was some static-filled recordings that seem to suggest the ships had stumbled into large, deadly colonized planets surrounded by vast minefields; however, these recording have been dismissed by the federal government who maintains that such colonization of planets in the outer rim is not possible and that the resources to build such vast minefields would not be available after such a short period of time. Slowly these reports began to suggest that even the smaller neutral trading galaxy had mines sporadically appearing. And this is where we begin Decennial Resurgence!"

Thank you,

The SMR Administration Team
