Email news letter.

Post by Freon22 »

The email news letter that was just send out is from the web-board email accounts. While this is ok I don't think everyone that plays SMR has an account on the web-board. It maybe a good idea to send from game email accounts.

The following is an e-mail sent to you by an administrator of "SMR-CNN". If
this message is spam, contains abusive or other comments you find offensive
please contact the webmaster of the board at the following address:

webboard@smrealms.de

Include this full e-mail (particularly the headers).

Message sent to you follows:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hello Everybody!
In this 17th SMR Newsletter we are pleased to inform you that along
with SMR 1.5 you can now also play the old version of SMR at
http://classic.smrealms.de. The code it will use is the code that was
used right before the switch to 1.5. The new game will start January
11th (game time, approximately 6 pm EST 1/10/2009.) All the old
accounts and statistics were wiped so you will have to create a new
one to play.
In other news Page (our coder) is working on the 1.6 code. 1.6 has
been completely redesigned from SMR 1.5 (without all the bugs in SMR
1.5!) and is packed with features from the SMR 1 code. Some
differences between 1.5 and 1.6 include:
-The links that don't work in 1.5 work in 1.6 (including the photo album!)
-Reply button for in-game messages
-Bounties (they have been re-added!)
-Port searches (Feds will search your ship at ports for evil goods.)
-Note section under the trader link
-You will no longer receive free maps at the start of the game, you'll
have to explore or purchase to update your maps.
-Admin tools
…and more!
So with that in mind be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the next
newsletter and upcoming changes (including the 1.6 code!). We also
hope you enjoy playing SMR Classic, a game that I'm sure we all have
fond memories of.
-Thanks,
The SMR Admin Team
I needed to send it out via webboard because I was unable to get ahold of Spock to get him to send it out to the game account e-mails, and he is the only one with access to that list.
In the end, it was either webboard or no e-mail at all
Well good job on the email, also Spock should give you or another Admin access to the send email. Its not like you would be able to see all the emails, its just a loop or a bcc send. But with what you have access to now you did good.
He is a very resourceful admin :). But don't let him take credit for writing it, another admin did that ;).
I think the email may have worked some. I see some old players back on the web board and a few new accounts.
You know here at work I have a database with over 20 years worth of customers. When work slows down I query that database by date, area or whatever. It never fails to bring in some more work. The SMR game has a database with lots of email address. I don't know why I don't see a email every month or at least at the start of every game from SMR. Baalzamon sending out a web board email was a great idea. I wonder how many more players would have returned if the emails would have been from the SMR database?
Want more players then work the database, that is what its for.
This has been noted Siege, though it's not as simple as you think.
Sorry Blade but I have to say "WHAT!" What is so hard about coding a page for sending out emails?
Wait, don't tell me that when SMR 1.5 came out that the user accounts from 1.0 was not saved? If thats true then bad, bad, bad. When 1.6 comes out I know that everyone will again have to create a new account. But the user accounts from 1.5 should not be dumped until a few emails have been sent out from those accounts.
