Can I buy and use ships that aren't for my race? Just wondering cos I spotted a good one but, looking in the ship list it isn't of my race??

Nope, but the current game ends soon, and then you get to pick your race all over again.

When I buy a new ship will I lose any cargo or will it transfer??

you lose cargo, but not the holds unless the new ship cannot hold them. when you click on the ship you want to buy, it will bring up a comparison screen where you can see what will transfer over and what you will lose.

Cool, I didn't want to go and buy some cargo and then find I lose it when I get my new ship
