I need some help with the SMC, (Space Merchant Companion). Do I have to type in all the inforamtion my self or does it do it automatically?

No, you have to input it all manually

Most definitely yes, I have found it to be a most invaluable tool since starting to use it about 6-7 games ago.

What does SMC all do? I know it plots trade routes. Anything else?

It is much better for general navigating than galaxy map IMO (ultra compact maze rocks). Also it stores location info (ships, weapons, etc) and actually lets you keep track of the racial owners of ports and their levels unlike galaxy map.
