NHA Message Board (revised)

Post by Baalzamon »

I will be posting on here every topic that we have on the message board. They are not in any specific order

Alot of these topics are the exact same ones as Ardbeg had on the board previously, some of them I took and tweaked, and a bunch are written by me completely.

Two of the topics for some reason wouldn't post, here are links to them:

Guide to OPs **EXPERIENCED PLAYERS ONLY**

If people have suggestions of what else is needed, please send me a message, be it in game, chat, or on the WB

Merchants Guide to the Universe

Merchant Guide to the Universe, or MGU for short, is an extremely useful tool that can assist you in finding trade routes, arming your ship, and various other things as well. It includes a calculator to use while trading at neutral ports (since you can't build relations with them unless you are alskant). I recommend that you get this program and get used to using it. Unfortunately, it is not compatible for macs, but any windows computer can use it.

To download it, go to lotus.smrealms.de and it is at the bottom left side of the website. After you download it, go to the left panel on SMR, and it says "DL MGU Maps" do this, and then open them up in MGU by going to file->load map.
To find trade routes, you can click on "Find Route" on the top panel, and choose your galaxy. you have the ability to toggle illegal goods (slaves, weapons, narcotics) on or off by clicking on them.

Once you have the program, you can see a video tutorial here:

Guide to OPs **EXPERIENCED PLAYERS ONLY**

Note: OPs, or Operations are only done by veteran alliances and players. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DO THIS ALONE!

HOW TO PB/PR? There are easy few steps to do OPS, after all plans are made and targets previously selected, it is easy, everyone can do them.

STEP-1 Use mIRC chat to communicate
Make sure you can see both Chat and the game at the same time. Change your nick to show your name as well as turns (ie /nick Predrag_450) **BE IN CHAT 30MIN PRIOR TO OP**

STEP-2 Follow Instructions.
Alliances have OP leaders. They may be the same person or a different person as the alliance leader. Either way, you need to listen to them, do as they say, and do not question them. When the time comes for the OP to start, the leader will say where to meet. Everyone gather there and sit IS waiting for your next instructions

STEP-3 Travel to Target Sector
The initial sector people meet in is generally not the first target. You will meet in one sector and travel as a group to your target, moving sector by sector via OP leader?s orders.

STEP-4 Clear route to closest UNO and CA (if any CA is in the vicinity)
Knowing the closest Uno and CA are extremely important, CA more so in PBs then PRs, but still they are extremely important. Make sure you have the surrounding area of both the target seeded, as well as the path to the Uno, and sectors around the Uno. Pick up forces after the OP if it is a PR, leave them if it is a PB

STEP-5 Gather in target sector again, to start PB/PR
There is one person considered the ?trigger? and it is (in most cases) the OP leader. The only time this changes is if the OP leader doesn?t have enough turns, in which case the person with the most turns takes over as trigger. Everyone sits in sector, continually refreshing. Once everyone is in sector, the trigger will say, in chat, ?3?2?1?FIRE? When ONLY THE TRIGGER FIRES. **NO ONE OTHER THEN THE PERSON ACTING TRIGGER FIRES!!!**

STEP-6 Unoing/CAing
After the initial fire, the trigger waits. Anyone with a /11 or less says ?UNO? in chat, and runs like a bat out of hell to Uno and back. Once everyone is back, Step 5 is repeated until the Port or Planet has been busted.

Step-7 Continuing the OP
If there are more targets during the OP, the OP leader will, at this point, restart from step 2 and continue throughout the guide once more.

After the OP, or when your turns are getting too low to continue, each person Feds. Sleeping in a freshly taken planet galaxy is not recommended. When you fed, be sure to sell your weapons, and drop CDs if you need to to get safe in fed again.

Advanced Guide to Trade Routes

Example: 1.20e 2092$ 3d - A92 A120 - Luxury / Computers : 3x3x 3x3x

This is what you get when you look for routes on MGU, Each part of the line means something specific

1.20e This refers to the amount of experience you make per good, put simply. This number is multiplied by .175 and you get the experience per good. For each good traded on this route, you will be receiving .21experience per good, with 400 holds (ATM) you will be receiving an average of 84 experience for each transaction.

2092$ This refers to the monetary value of the route. To be honest, I'm not positive on how this number is figured. But the higher the number, the more money you make on the route (thats the important part anyway.)

3d This refers to the distance. There is a distance of 3 sectors on this route.

A92 A120 Refers to the port, and the port's race. "A" stands for Alskant and 92 and 120 are the sectors

Luxury / Computers This refers to the goods traded on that route, and are respective to the sectors. So in this case, you would buy Luxury at 92, and you would buy Computers at 120, selling them at the opposite port.

3x3x 3x3x This is the detailed part of the route, making it how good or bad the route is. Referred to as the route's "Multiplier" it is the most important part when finding a route. the first 3x3x is respective to Luxury, and the second 3x3x to Computers. The first number describes how far away the nearest port it to buy the item from you, which is 3 sectors away. Lets call this port port A. The second 3x refers to the distance from port A to the port closest to port A to sell it....

For example...say that this was a 3x2x. You buy luxury at 92, and the nearest port to sell it is 3 away. However, the nearest port from THAT port to sell it, is only two away, bringing down the multiplier, and thereby bringing down the experienced gained from the sale.

In short, the first number will designate the amount of EXP you gain for buying, where the second designates how much you receive for selling.

Guide to Chat

It is very helpful to learn to use IRC chat often while playing this game. The first step is to simply use the IRC chat link on the left of your screen and just spend some time in the #smr room getting to know some of the players. This is also a good time to ask questions - not just about technical or tactical aspects of the game, but about what the players like about the game, about the alliances, about pretty much anything. Getting to know the players and the community is part of getting to know SMR.

Should you choose to use mIRC (which I recommend) The steps in which to set it up are below.

Note: mIRC does NOT work with a mac. To use an IRC client with a mac, I recommend using Colloquy, another IRC client made specifically for macs.

1) First download mIRC at http://www.mirc.com
2) Open mIRC and go to "Tools" on the top tabs.
3) Click "Options" on the "Tools" tab.
4) Go to "Connect" then click "Servers".
5) Click "Add".
6) For "Description" put SMR.
7) For "Irc Server" put "irc.vjtd3.com".
8) For "Ports" put "6667" or if it already has don't change it.
9) Click "Ok"
10) Click "SMR" ONCE and then click "Select".
11) Click "Connect to Server".
12) Type in "/j #SMR"
13) Your in. =)

Ok if you have a mac that doesnt like MIRC then colloquy is the way to go.

1) go to http://www.colloquy.com
2) follow the steps to download it....its free so dont worry about money
3) create your username and make the connection to colloquy- connection is irc.vjtd3.com(yourname)
4) Join chat room.....#chatroomname
-you dont need the /j in fact it wont work if you try to use it that way
5) Welcome to the chat room enjoy!!

If anyone still has questions about it please dont hesitate to ask

Safe Trading

1)Find the right route
-The right route may not be the best route. The right route can more often then not be a nice balance of experience and cash, and sometimes a tiny bit on the low end, since hunters usually hunt the main routes of a race.
- If your routes are hunted alot, go for crappy routes. Make use of 2xs, you can bring in a fair amount of experience and cash, you just have to stay out there longer.

2)Use the right ship.
- Early in the game, you use Racial Traders, and sometimes, if you're lucky, ISTs. This is fine, but later on in the game, you should be getting into a PSF, or if you're Alskant, ATM. These ships are the optimal traders, even though they are a bit on the slow side.

3)Use forces.
-This is something that not many people remember to do. You need to be safe trading. Drop a scout on each sector of your route, and a mine on each port. The second you get a ping, run back to fed, don't even check to see who it is, better safe then sorry.
- Pick up your forces after trading. This prevents hunters from learning your route even easier then they already can. It also makes it so that you don't have to keep getting forces.

4)Use your allies.
-Have someone watch the CPL for you while you trade. If they see someone pop on who is a known hunter, then can ping you in chat and you get back to fed.

5)Use Local Map
-Even though if you're using forces, you should know when someone is around you, Local map helps you even more, and optimizes your safety while trading.

6)Always be paranoid.
-The more paranoid you are about trading, the safer you'll be, and the less you will die trading.

Alignment

Alignment has a couple of functions, the main ones being for trading purposes and determining which restricted ships and weapons you can buy.

If you are evil (alignment -100 or lower) you can trade evil goods, buy underground ships (Thief, Assasin, Death Cruiser which are all cloaked) and buy the underground level 5 weapon (nuke). If you are neutral (between -99 and 99 alignment) you can become evil by signing up as a gang member at Underground HQ. Evil players cannot enter federal (racial) HQ's.

If you are good (alignment 100 or higher) you can buy federal ships (Federal Discovery, Warrant and Ultimatum which all have jump drive and take half damage from forces) and buy the federal level 5 weapon (holy hand grenade). If you are neutral (between -99 and 99 alignment) you can become good by deputizing at any racial HQ. Good players cannot enter the underground HQ.

Alignment also affects the attack ratings you can have and still be federally protected in fed space. At neutral alignment you can park with an attack rating of 3, and the protected rating goes up 1 for every +150 alignment and down 1 for every -150 alignment. You are always protected with an attack rating of zero.
